How weekly options expiration works

Every listed weekly option has a fixed expiration date, the last day it can be traded or exercised. For standard US equity options that is 4:00 pm Eastern on the expiration Friday. After the close, in-the-money contracts settle and out-of-the-money contracts expire worthless. Weeklies simply add more of these Friday expirations between the monthly ones, which is what makes short, catalyst-driven trades possible.

Common questions

When do weekly options expire?

Weekly options expire at the close of trading every Friday the market is open. When a Friday is a US market holiday, that week's options expire on the preceding trading day, usually Thursday.

What is the difference between weekly and monthly options expiration?

Monthly options expire on the third Friday of each month. Weekly options expire on every other Friday, giving traders shorter, more frequent windows to trade a specific catalyst.

Do all stocks have weekly options?

No. Weekly options are listed on the most actively traded stocks, ETFs and indexes. You can see the stocks we research, and their track records, on our weekly options by stock pages.

What time do weekly options expire?

Standard equity weekly options stop trading at 4:00 pm Eastern on their expiration Friday and are settled after the close. Some index options settle differently.
